 Feb.6: W.C. Brandtonies Cup 2007 Winners

This year the golf "Scramble" format went to three threesomes and coming in a gross two-under par was this winning team composed of graduates from Baldwin in 1951. Left-to-Right is shown Wayne Dibartola, Sally Enkoff Boyer and Ken Wuerthele during the banquet at Le Pavillon on San Marco Avenue across the street from our Comfort Suites headquarters for the three days of festivities. Plans will be formulated for the next Mini in the winter of 2008 and will be announced after Labor Day this year. While nine members golfed thirty-one others enjoyed two days of sights in Historic St. Augustine which was founded by the Spanish in 1565. although five of the eight "Mini's" held since 1997 have been in St. Augustine we all found several places that we had not visited before and the tour train trolley was an aid to getting around with it's twenty stops.

 Jan. 6, 2007 Dick Kording

It is with great sadness to announce the death Jan. 4 in Pawley's Island, South Carolina of Richard G. "Dick" Kording after a lingering bout with prostate cancer. Fortunately, at his side with his wife Lillie Lou, was Dick's siblings Gary and Karen and their spouses as well as his life-long best friend Hal Steiner and Lil. The four sons and their families live coast-to-coast and had either been in recently or arriving soon such as son Dale. The South Carolina funeral services may have been held by the time you read this and flowers are discouraged. I do not post home addresses on this blog but you can mail cards to their home address shown in our class directory and any memorials may be made to your American Cancer Society chapter of your choice. I went all the way up with Dick from our Union School days and he was a sweet guy. /s/jack
ADDENDUM: I just learned that there will be a Memorial Service for Dick at Pawley's Island, South Carolina on Saturday January 20th. Pawley's Island is North of Charleston and South of Myrtle Beach -near Georgetown

Dec, 27: Class President, 1951. JACK SMITH with PEARL

JACK SMITH and his wife Barbara had both their sons graduate from West Point. One, Scott, is still on active duty and was recently posted in Korea where he was promoted to Major. He acquired a rare North Korean dog, a POONGSAN, pictured here with Jack after he shipped it stateside preparatory to his return to the USA,

Dec. 19 - JOE TUCKER and WWSW, all 250 Watts

Having lived in Florida since 1966 the first question people ask each other is "Where are you from?" A recent encounter in our neighborhood replied when I said "Pittsburgh" that she was related to a broadcaster named JOE TUCKER and has a book he wrote in 1973. I replied that I certainly did remember Joe for he broadcast the Steeler games I listened to in the pre-TV days of the 1940's and until I left the Burgh in 1958. She lent me "Steelers Victory After Forty" which may have been self-published in 1973 by Exposition Press, NYC. The title come from the fact that it took the Steelers forty years to achieve their first title. It has a forward by Jack Bell who was a longtime journalist for the Post-Gazette. Tucker first broadcast the Stihers in 1938 and continued until near his retirement in 1970 to Hallandale, Florida (near Miami) where he was a ten handicap golfer and died in 1979. Wow, we could have used him on a Brandtonies Cup team! The book starts with the formation of the Steelers in the year many of us were born - 1933, So far it has been a delightful read and maybe some of the Pittsburgh libraries still have it on their shelves. I hope so. BTW, TUCKER also broadcast the Pittsburgh Hornet games from Duquesne Gardens where they played such teams as the Hershey Bears (a great name) and the heyday of Duquesne Basketball when they had such stars as Sihugo Green and Charley Cooper, who married a Baldwin gal./s/jack

 December 17

The movie "GREASE" is what one of my daughters-in-law says this photo reminds her. Of course that movie was made about twenty years after these guys from Baldwin 1950 and 1951 were looking over the campus of Penn State and their Nittany Lion. L-R; Frank Sweitzer.Tony Lisanti,Dick Phillips, Dick Call, Nemo Scrabis See Gallery for the other pic. and Tom Weber substitues for Scrabis taking the picture.
